Did you know? Canada’s Ultra-Violet Auroral Imager (UVAI) launched into orbit with Sweden’s Viking satellite in 1986. It provided Canadian scientists with their first photographs of the entire aurora region.

Speaking of the Aurora Borealis, Canada is one of the best places on Earth to witness them. Almost every province and territory has the chance to witness them at certain times during the year.

  • If you woke up today thinking you’d love to have the world’s largest hockey stick in your front yard, you’re in luck! The town of Duncan, B.C., is seeking a buyer for their 62-metre, 28,000-kg wooden stick, which has been affixed to the town’s community centre for more than 35 years. Unfortunately, it requires about $1.5 million in repairs and they just don’t have the moola right now.

  • If you think Canadian geese are aggressive, just try to go one-on-one with a kangaroo. This police officer learned this the hard way, taking a punch from a Kangaroo that escaped in Oshawa, Ontario.

  • Alaska Airlines is acquiring Hawaiian Airlines for US$1.9 billion in a deal that will keep both brands alive. Since Alaska Airlines serves Western Canada fairly well, it could make for great fares to the Aloha state.

  • Cruise vacations are once again all the rage. Almost 35.7 million passengers are expected to take a cruise in 2024, up from 31.5 million in 2023. Cruise lines have even increased capacity by 5% and still can’t meet the demand. This, of course, means that prices will go up.

  • The winter months can bring delays to air travel, some of which is due to de-icing the planes. Air Canada has to de-ice its aircraft more than 45,000 times every year. However, they’re now testing new de-icing strips that could eliminate takeoff delays.

  • While we’d never recommend planning your travel solely from listicles, they can still be a fun way to get some ideas. So, with that in mind, here is Lonely Planet’s guide to the best places to travel in 2024. Montreal made the cut when it came to cities.
