Things to Do in Canada 156

Good morning!

Did you know? One of the world’s biggest pond hockey tournaments takes place in the tiny town of Plaster Rock, New Brunswick. This year, it takes place from Feb 15 - 18.

Speaking of the World Pond Hockey Championships, it’s one of the coolest things you can experience as a hockey fan. We had the pleasure of actually entering a team back in 2020 and had such a blast playing teams from all over the world. Plaster Rock is home to just over 1,000 people and yet it comes together and builds 20 ice surfaces on a small rink to host more than 100 teams from all across Canada, the United States, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean. However, even if you don’t enter, it’s worth a visit just to see. Plus, the evening parties are awesome and there are many fun things to do in the winter in New Brunswick.

So without further ado, enjoy the 156th edition of the Weekly Goose, which features a video about our experience, an article about the experience, guides to enjoying the winter in New Brunswick, and more!

  • Whether you live in Ottawa or are planning to visit Ottawa this winter, we have good news: The Rideau Canal Skateway has finally opened after being closed since 2022. The Skateway is 7.8 kilometres in length and is the world’s largest natural ice rink.

  • The 2024 NHL All-Star game will be hosted in Toronto next weekend, likely bringing in a lot of tourism. We’re excited to see it back in Canada but not sure we like their new jerseys, designed by Justin Bieber’s fashion label.

  • Do you love visiting Canada’s coastline but are looking for something more “chill”? Canada’s Coast Guard is looking for lighthouse keepers.

  • Although it’s not quite travel-related, we think it’s pretty cool that Nunavut finally gets to take control of its land. Just a few days ago, Nunavut and the federal government signed the largest land transfer deal in Canadian history, giving Canada’s newest territory total responsibility over its land and natural resource management, just like every other province and territory has.

  • Speaking of Nunavut, the latest research season at the Franklin wrecks in Nunavut has produced new artifacts and thousands of images that will provide insight into what life was like for the crews aboard these ships during this expedition. You can travel there yourself with Adventure Canada.
