Did you know? Grasslands are one of the planet's most endangered ecosystems. It's estimated that over 80% of Canadian prairies have already been lost to other uses.

Thankfully, more grasslands will be preserved thanks to an agreement between the Thrall family, the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC), and Duck Unlimited Canada to preserve the entirety of McIntyre Ranch, a 130-year-old Alberta ranch that encompasses 22,000 hectares of native prairie and wetlands, which we’ll discuss below.

Speaking of Grasslands, however, the most spectacular place you can experience them is in Southern Saskatchewan’s Grasslands National Park. But don’t just take our word for it. Check out our travel guide and video in the 169th edition of the Weekly Goose.

You might be wondering why Grasslands are so important. Well, there are many reasons, such as:

• Grasslands absorb and store billions of tonnes of carbon, keeping it fixed in the soil and helping to counter the effects of climate change.

• They trap and filter precious water resources on the Prairies, lessening both floods and droughts and providing drinking water for thousands of communities.

• Grasslands are an economic driver of local economies and essential to food security.

• They host an astonishing variety of plants and wildlife, which are increasingly threatened by habitat loss. In fact, bird populations that rely on native grasslands have declined by 90 percent since 1970.

• Western grasslands are the ancestral homes of many Indigenous communities, whose culture and history are entwined with the natural cycles of the Great Plains.

This landmark agreement is just one more way we make sure they stay intact for future generations.
