Things to Do in Canada 186

Good morning!

Did you know? Whistler got its name from the whistling call of the Hoary Marmot. These silvery grey, brownish marmots can easily be mistaken as an exceptionally large beaver and they are a common sight on Whistler Mountain. These marmots are North America’s largest ground squirrel species, weighing from 8 to 20 pounds. The marmots' whistling can sometimes be heard by tourists wandering near the outskirts of the village.

With that in mind, there are lots of fun things to do near Vancouver, including all sorts of attractions and sights around Whistler. So without further ado, enjoy the 186th edition of the Weekly Goose!

Both Whistler and Squamish offer stunning beauty and loads of fun outdoor attractions. If you’re looking for adventure not far from Vancouver, we’ve got you covered.

Beaver Bites

  • When Banff introduced the creation of a pedestrian-only street during the summer months, it quickly became popular with visitors and locals alike. After all, who doesn’t like fresh flowers, bigger patios, and less exhaust fumes while walking down scenic Banff Avenue? Well, it turns out some prefer cars. This week, residents voted against Banff's annual pedestrian zone and will now be removed.

  • Jasper residents are now being allowed to go back home. However, visitors are being asked to stay away for the time being.

  • Speaking of Jasper, actor Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad, Malcolm in the Middle) recently enjoyed the Canadian Rockies, including time in Jasper and on the Rocky Mountaineer. Besides commenting on how beautiful the entire area is, he told his followers to visit Jasper once it reopens.

  • Another “low-cost” Canadian airline bites the dust. Less than two years after launching, Canada Jetlines has grounded all of its flights as it prepared for bankruptcy. For those that don’t remember, don’t know, or are trying to forget, we also lost Swoop and Lynx Air over the last year, paving the way for what many consider a monopolistic industry in Canada.

  • Scooters are cool and all but we’ve always thought it was annoying to see people leaving them in the middle of nowhere. Well, it turns out we are not the only ones. Cities have been reluctant to adopt them due to this problem but Lime is looking to change that. Starting in Vancouver, the company plans to roll out designated docking areas to limit pile-ups on sidewalks and streets.
