Things to Do in Canada 188 (Saint Pierre and Miquelon)

In partnership with

Good morning!

Did you know? During the 1920s and the American prohibition, Saint-Pierre and Miquelon were one of the most popular places to smuggle alcohol into the US, with infamous mobsters setting up operations on the island. Even Al Capone used the islands and was a client of Hotel Robert, a hotel that still operates today. Another fun fact is that it also appears in the final episodes of Peaky Blinders.

Speaking of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, we’ve been there twice and find it fascinating that a slice of France lives just a few kilometres off the coast of Newfoundland. If you haven’t been, check out our guide and video below, dust off that passport, and travel there by ferry (or plane) to practice your French as you roam the streets.

  • Canada’s most popular pastime lately seems to be going on strike. Here we are again, with Air Canada pilots authorizing a strike mandate. The airline's pilots can now go on strike as early as mid-September. Last year, WestJet’s pilots secured a labour deal that included a 24% pay bump.

  • On another note, Air Canada is offering increased flexibility for rebooking travel for those who could be affected. The airline says progress has been made in its negotiations and it hopes to reach a deal, but it still faces the possibility of a strike by its 5,400 pilots as early as Sept. 17.

  • If we had to choose just one food to eat for eternity, it would probably be pizza. Thankfully, Canada has many good pizza joints and this woman travelled around Canada to find out who does it best.

  • Flair Airlines is looking to lure customers with ultra-cheap fares starting at $1. Passengers flying from Mexico, the U.S., Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic can take advantage of the ultra-low fare, which aims to “give back” to customers by making use of seats that would otherwise sit empty.

  • Visitors to Banff National Park, and especially those living in nearby Calgary, can tell you that it has become significantly overcrowded since 2017. The town is now seeing more than 4 million visitors every year, 90% of whom arrive by car. However, one local oil tycoon is trying to change the traffic issue with a $1.5 billion rail line from Calgary.

  • Here are some ways to potentially score a free hotel room upgrade.

Although we had rainy weather for most of our days in Saint-Pierre & Miquelon, we still made the most of it by travelling to both islands to get a glimpse into this truly hidden gem.

Just for Fun

  • Fall is just around the corner, which just so happens to be the time when people seem to go crazy for pumpkin spice-flavoured products. So much so that the industry is worth more than US$800 million a year. Wild.

  • We’ll never understand the obsession with wanting Tim Horton’s merch but for those that do, they’re now releasing dog toys.

  • Getting scammed is one of the worst parts of world travel. It’s bound to happen at some point but lower your chances by learning about these 10 sneaky travel scams that are easy to fall for.
