Things to Do in Canada 189 - Fall Colours

Good morning!

Did you know? The colours of Autumn that we all love to see are very dependent on climate, which is why it can be hard to time a visit to certain places to see the best colours. The quantity and quality of the colour vary depending on weather, sunlight and soil moisture. Higher temperatures, increased precipitation, and increased cloud cover all act together to disrupt the vibrancy, longevity and brilliance of fall tones.

Either way, it is certainly something worth travelling for, especially in places like Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia where the colours can be quite dramatic. We’re heading to Quebec in late September to hopefully see some stunning displays, but up until now, the best we’ve ever seen was along the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. It truly is spectacular in early October.

So whether you’re interested in watching a video about the fall colours in Nova Scotia or reading about the best Canada road trips during the fall, enjoy the 189th edition of the Weekly Goose!

If you’re looking to do a road trip to see some beautiful fall colours, this article lists some of the best during the fall. However, Cabot Trail is easily one of the best, so we’ve dedicated an entire article for those wondering what to do when they get there.

Beaver Bites

  • Who doesn’t love the beautiful changing colours that Autumn brings? We’ve travelled as far as Nova Scotia to see some of the best displays we’ve ever seen. If you plan on travelling to see them, this botany expert says the leaves will change colours earlier this year.

  • As online shopping exploded in popularity over the last decade, people thought malls were dead. Boy, were they wrong! While low-key shopping centres might be dying out, massive luxury-style mixed-used malls are becoming all the rage. Take Montreal’s new $7-billion Royalmount Mall, which is home to more than 170 retailers, including 60 restaurants and cafes, across 800,000 square feet. It’s the most expensive mall development in Canadian history and is bound to become popular with locals and visitors alike. The mall is also planning to open office spaces, housing, and an aquarium.

  • It’s no secret that places like Banff National Park and Niagara Falls are beautiful. However, you should also know that they’re completely overrun with tourists, especially during the summer season. In fact, if you don’t like crowds, you’ll probably want to avoid all the destinations mentioned in this article during peak travel dates.

  • If you’ve been to Banff or Jasper in the last few years, you’ve most likely enjoyed an attraction, hotel stay, or restaurant owned and run by Pursuit Collection. Owned by Arizona-based VIAD, they now look to be buying the Jasper SkyTram for $25 million, a move that gives the company control over six of the nine paid attractions in Banff and Jasper national parks. While Parks Canada has signed off on it, it has caught the attention of the Competition Bureau as many complain that this is very monopolistic.

  • Newfoundland is one of our favourite provinces for many reasons. The people, the landscapes, the food, the music, and yes, getting Screeched In. But now there’s another reason to visit Newfoundland: Cuddling cows.

Watch

Few things compare to taking a helicopter flight over Cape Breton’s Cabot Trail during the fall season. However, whether you get up in the sky, go for a hike, or drive around the area, the colours are simply mind-blowing.

Just for Fun

  • Restaurants are suddenly getting a new type of customer: solo eaters. What was once sort of frowned upon or considered strange is becoming quite normal as more people than ever are living alone. This trend is growing so quickly that some restaurants are changing their menus and surroundings to suit solo diners, such as smaller meals and smaller booths.

  • Whether you’re a local or someone visiting Canada, you’re not wrong when you ask yourself where all the pesky wasps are coming from. From our home city of Calgary to the east coast, we seem to be outnumbered by these stingy creatures. According to researchers, this is why.

  • If your goal for this Halloween is to look ridiculous, Chipotle (yes, the restaurant) has the perfect costume for you. Teaming up with Spirit Halloween, the chain is creating themed costumes, including a fork, water cup, napkin, to-go bag, and yes, a burrito. Canadians will probably hold off for a Double-Double costume.
