Things to Do in Vancouver

Good morning!

Did you know? Vancouver is named after Captain George Vancouver, who explored the inner harbour of Burrard Inlet in 1792 and gave various places British names. The family name “Vancouver” originates from the Dutch “van Coevorden”, denoting somebody from the city of Coevorden, Netherlands.

Another fun fact is that I’m writing this newsletter from sunny Vancouver. I know, it’s supposed to be rainy, right? That’s what I’ve heard throughout the years but right now, in late January, it’s a balmy 6°C and I just finished a lovely sunset walk along False Creek. Every time I visit Vancouver, I’m impressed by its beauty. I’m also impressed that many of the activities we recommend in the summer can still be enjoyed almost all year round.

So, without further ado, enjoy the 209th edition of the Weekly Goose, which features a variety of Vancouver travel guides, a video about 12 of the best things to do there, Beaver Bites travel news, and more!

  • Everyone loves art, but many cities, such as Vancouver, have little space for artists to work. That’s why this idea of turning old SkyTrains into art studios is so awesome.

  • As beautiful as Iceland is, I guess there just wasn’t enough demand from Canadians. Play Airlines, an Icelandic budget airline that began offering weekly flights from Hamilton, is permanently departing Canada.

  • Speaking of international flights, those visiting England will now be subject to an electronic travel authorization (ETA) before flying across the ocean. Canadians visiting the “homeland” for six months or less will have to submit their passport details, dates of travel, and modes of transport, in addition to a £10 ($18) fee.
