Unless you’re visiting somewhere truly remote, it’s unlikely you’ll experience an unpaved runway. For those of you okay with landing on a paved runway in one of Canada’s top towns and cities, we’ve got some ideas for you. These are the Top Trending Destinations for Canadian Travellers this Summer
Ever wonder what the most popular Canadian destinations are for Canadians? A popular travel booking platform released some of its search statistics, and five destinations stood out. Whether you’re looking for a popular place to visit or trying to avoid the popular spots this year, you’ll enjoy this list of the top trending destinations in Canada. Plus, if you decide to add them to your bucket list, we’ve got travel guides to help you figure out what to do.
Tofino, British Columbia
According to the report, Tofino is the number one trending Canadian destination for 2025. Located on the west coast of Vancouver Island, this surf destination has long been coveted for its breathtaking scenery, lush rainforests and gorgeous beaches. Popular with whale watchers, nature enthusiasts and surfers, searches for Tofino have increased 35%. However, we can tell you first-hand that Tofino is VERY BUSY during July and August. Try visiting in the shoulder season to avoid the crowds.
St. John’s, Newfoundland
Holding strong at #2, this East Coast city is on many Canadian bucket lists. With all the charm of a small town and the perks of a larger metropolis, this unique destination is one of North America’s oldest cities with iconic jelly bean coloured houses, steep hills, hidden alleys, lots of history, and more.
Nanaimo, British Columbia
Vancouver Island is in the spotlight for 2025. Just a few spots behind Tofino in third place is Nanaimo. This city offers a mix of historic charm, modern developments and stunning scenery. A visit to Nanaimo could include bungee jumping, shopping at a vintage store, hiking to Canada’s only floating pub, and of course, enjoying a mouth-watering Nanaimo bar.
Gaspésie-Iles-de-la-Madeleine, Quebec
Perhaps more of a hidden gem compared to the others on this list, the Gaspé Peninsula sits in fourth spot and is located along the St. Lawrence River in Quebec, boasting national parks, seaside cliffs, mountains and other natural wonders, including Percé Rock — an island pierced by a naturally formed arch. Spas and wellness centres make this hiker’s paradise a rejuvenating getaway for everyone.
Halifax, Nova Scotia
Last but not least is another one of our favourite East Coast cities. Halifax delivers a dynamic culinary scene, quaint shops, a gorgeous waterfront, historic sites, and more. It’s easy to see why this East Coast city has attracted more interest.

Beaver Bites
Anyone visiting Banff during the summer months is probably thinking that over-tourism is becoming a problem. Well, other places, especially in Europe, feel your pain. Take Paris, where just a few weeks ago, would-be Louvre visitors were left without seeing any priceless artwork as workers held an impromptu strike that kept the museum closed in response to over-tourism, which they believe is jeopardizing their health and that of the art. For those that don’t know, the extremely world-famous Louvre Museum saw 8.7 million visitors last year, more than double the number of museum-goers it’s equipped to handle annually. While there are some expansion plans in the works, it’s not enough. And it’s not just France either. There have been many coordinated over-tourism protests in at least a dozen cities across Spain, Italy, and Portugal as they argue that mass tourism is driving up housing, erasing local culture, and causing environmental degradation.
Some places are getting creative with vacant office buildings. Take Calgary, which just opened its first office-turned-hotel, a 226-room development that benefited from almost $10 million from a city program aimed at putting vacant office space to better use. While only some buildings qualify for such a thing, it could be one solution to the 17% office vacancy rate across the country.
Vermont wants Canadians to keep crossing the border, so much so that Burlington unanimously passed a motion to rename a popular road Canada Street for the summer in a gesture to reconcile with Canadians disavowing U.S. travel. Some local businesses are also offering special promotions just for Canadians. Hmmm. Make it permanent, and we can talk.
An iconic intersection in Winnipeg, popularly known as Canada’s coldest and windiest, is open to foot traffic for the first time in decades.
