Labour Day Celebrations
Good morning!
Did you know? The first Labour Day parade in Canada took place in Toronto in 1872, with about 10,000 workers participating. That parade and the 1872 Toronto Typographical Union Strike are what led to Labour Day as we know it, celebrated on the first Monday of September. Culturally, it now features lots of fun events, parades, and the last long weekend of the summer months.
Speaking of Labour Day, it’s coming up this weekend. If you’re looking for something to do before the summer ends, we’ve got some ideas for you in the 239th edition of the Weekly Goose.
Enjoy!

Labour Day in Canada isn’t just the unofficial end of summer — it’s a full-on long weekend of parades, festivals, fireworks, and football. Here’s what’s happening coast-to-coast:
Ontario
Toronto: The CNE closes out with fireworks, concerts, and deep-fried everything, while the Canadian International Air Show roars over Lake Ontario. Don’t miss the Labour Day Parade, which proudly marches into the fairgrounds.
Hamilton: The legendary Labour Day Classic sees the Tiger-Cats battle the Argos.
Ottawa
Milton: Step back in time at the Steam Era Festival, complete with historic tractors and a parade.
Other cities: Parades and union gatherings in London, Oshawa, North Bay, Belleville, Kingston, Lindsay, Ottawa, and more!
Quebec
Montreal: Festivals galore — from dance battles at JOAT Festival to outdoor art and performances at the FAR Festival.
British Columbia
Vancouver: The long weekend is filled with fun activities, including the PNE Fair, night markets, sunflower festivals, and even a community falafel picnic.
Victoria: Enjoy the Saanich Fair, the oldest agricultural fair in Western Canada.
Alberta
Calgary: The Stampeders take on the Elks in the CFL’s iconic Labour Day Classic. Plus, Alberta Day celebrations at Heritage Park (with a drone show!) and family fun at Spruce Meadows featuring the RCMP Musical Ride… and yes, racing corgis.
Edmonton: Alberta Day is also in the province’s capital city with tours, a marketplace, beer gardens, a drone show, music, and more.
Saskatchewan
Regina: Home of another CFL Labour Day Classic — Riders vs. Bombers, a prairie showdown that’s as heated as it gets.
Winnipeg
Winnipeg: If you’re not one of the hardcore football fans piling onto the buses heading west for the game, there are many fun things to do, such as Labour Day in Memorial Park.
Atlantic Canada
Halifax: Celebrate with the Labour Day Parade, community concerts, union-organized BBQs, and seaside celebrations.
Charlottetown: Happening on the weekend is the lovely Charlottetown Busker Festival.
Whether you’re catching the Snowbirds in Toronto, rocking out in Calgary, or cheering on the CFL classics, Labour Day in Canada is the ultimate long-weekend send-off to summer.
