Canadian Sunsets

In partnership with

Good morning!

Did you know? The colours of sunsets, such as red, orange, and pink, are caused by the scattering of shorter wavelengths of light (blue and violet) by the Earth's atmosphere, leaving longer wavelengths (red and orange) to dominate the sky. There’s also a reason why you may have noticed sunsets being prettier in the fall and winter, and that’s because dry continental air is becoming much more prevalent. Cleaner air means fewer colours will be scattered out of the visible spectrum.

However, another reason why fall and winter are great times for watching sunsets in Canada is that the days are shorter.

Since fall and winter “gulp” are just around the corner, we wanted to share some of the most spectacular sunset locations we’ve experienced in Canada, which is just another reason to consider a visit.

7 Amazing Places to Experience the Sunset in Canada

While the sun sets every day, it can be a little challenging to stay up during the summer months to see it. But now, with the days getting shorter, the sun is setting earlier, making the fall a great time to see the orange globe descend into the abyss.

We’ve seen our fair share of sunsets across the country, and although it would be impossible to pick “the best”, here are some of the ones we still remember…

Admiring the Atlantic Ocean from the top of Skyline Trail.

Skyline Trail, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia

One of the best sunsets we’ve ever seen came from the Skyline Trail, which sits along the world-famous Cabot Trail road trip of Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Island. The hike isn’t too hard, which means it can be busy, but looking down at stunning views of the ocean as the sun disappears is a bucket-list experience.

Cape Spear, Newfoundland

As the most easterly point in all of North America, Cape Spear is literally home to the first sunrise in the country. However, that can be a bit early for some people. So, instead of being first, go for sunset and tell people you saw the last sunset in the country. Combined with dramatic coastline views of the Atlantic Ocean and a lighthouse, this is one of the best places to watch the sun dip below the horizon.

Admiring the sunset from a beach in Tofino.

Tofino, British Columbia

Anywhere with an ocean usually makes for a dramatic sunset, but Tofino takes it to another level. We’ll always remember surfing (well, trying to anyway) as the skies turned sharp pink and orange, listening to the waves crash around us.

Kelowna, British Columbia

Kelowna may not have the ocean, but it does have one heck of a lake. Combine that with mountain ranges and a variety of wineries for an incredible sunset experience, best enjoyed with a refreshing wine in hand.

Drumheller, Alberta

For something totally different, head to Horseshoe Canyon in Drumheller, Alberta. Looking down over a spectacular canyon as the sun sets is mesmerizing. Watch the canyon change colour as you imagine a land before time when dinosaurs roamed the Earth instead of humans.

Grasslands National Park, Saskatchewan

Canada’s smallest National Park has a special place in our hearts. From vast prairie landscapes to badlands and canyons, the sunsets here are spectacular. Our top moment came while camping in the East Block. It was our first time experiencing a moonrise. Far out in the distance, we saw this orange globe. We thought it was an orange tent with someone inside using a flashlight, but after it seemed to rise slowly into the sky, we realized it was the moon, shining orange thanks to the sun that had just set moments ago. Spectacular.

Nunavut and the Canadian Arctic

While we can’t exactly pinpoint the location, there’s something magical about seeing the sunset in the Canadian Arctic. For us, it was during an Adventure Canada expedition cruise as we made our way from Nunavut to Greenland. As the sun began to set, casting a sharp orange glow across the horizon, our boat was surrounded by dozens of icebergs. That’s hard to beat! (Hint: see it for yourself in our video below)

As I mentioned earlier, these are just seven spectacular places to witness a sunset in Canada. In a country this size, there are thousands of locations. While a sunset can be amazing anywhere, you’ll want somewhere flat, like the coastline, if you want to see the sun dip over the horizon. Then again, seeing it dip below the mountains in a place like Banff National Park is equally amazing.

Either way, if the weather is right, make sure you experience at least one sunset everywhere you go.
