Rideau Canal

Good morning!

Did you know? The Rideau Canal stretches approximately 202 kilometers (125 miles) and includes 47 locks, making it the oldest continuously operated canal system in North America. It was a massive miltary project that took place between 1826 and 1832 to secure a route between Montreal and Kingston incase of an American Invasion, which was a very real concern after the War of 1812. Today, the Rideau Canal is both a National Historic Site and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracting visitors from all over the world.

Many know the Rideau Canal for holding the Guiness World Record for the largest naturally frozen ice rink, but in the summer, it’s one of the most spectuclar boating destinations in the country. In fact, one of those experience is featured in our Ontario Bucket List Deck.

Without any experience at all, you can rent a yacht from Le Boat and captain it yourself up or down the Rideau Canal, stopping in various historic towns along the way and taking occasional dips in the super clean waters. That’s what we just did in September, and now we can’t wait to do it again.

For the 249th edition of the Weekly Goose, we’ve got our latest video about renting a boat and spending a week on the Rideau Canal, an updated guide to Ottawa, and more!
