Kananaskis Mountain Lodge Takeover: Nordic Spa, Black Diamond Club & Winter in the Rockies
Good morning!
Did you know? Kananaskis Country covers more than 4,000 square kilometres of protected mountain landscape — with far fewer crowds than most national park hotspots. More space. More quiet. Same Rockies.
Speaking of Kananaskis Country, this week we’re shining the spotlight on the Kananaskis Mountain Lodge, a year-round Rocky Mountain basecamp that blends outdoor adventure with serious comfort. Think snowy peaks by day, spa steam by night, and one very tempting upgrade called the Black Diamond Club.
It’s one of Alberta’s most beautiful hotels and the only one in Kananaskis.
Welcome to the 265th edition of the Weekly Goose featuring the Kananaskis Mountain Lodge —
Let’s check in.

Here’s Your Two-Day Luxurious Winter Escape in Kananaskis Country
There are mountain escapes…
And then there are mountain escapes done properly, and with luxury.
This week, we’re mapping out the perfect winter escape in Kananaskis — where you can ski in the morning, soak in the afternoon, and upgrade your stay just enough to feel slightly smug about it.
Here’s your 48-hour game plan.
🗓️ Day 1 — Arrive & Hit the Slopes
Drive west. Watch the peaks get bigger. Feel your shoulders drop somewhere around Highway 40.
Check into the Kananaskis Mountain Lodge — your basecamp for the weekend.
If you’re looking for luxury, you’ve booked yourself into the Black Diamond Club.
That means:
Private lounge access
Elevated room category
Daily breakfast included
Evening canapés
Quieter retreat spaces
Concierge support
It’s the “mountain trip, but refined” option.
If you’re arriving later in the afternoon, just unpack, enjoy the scenery, wander the beautiful property, and enjoy dinner at Cedar Room and/or Après at Woody’s Pub on weekends from 2 - 5 pm, a great après ski offering with food and drink specials, live music and ski movies on the screens. It's a perfect place to stop for a drink and a bite after skiing at Nakiska, which we discuss below…
If you arrive in the morning, hit the slopes at Nakiska Ski Area, which is just minutes from the lodge.
Nakiska is such a great resort for a winter escape, as it features:
Quick lift access
Great terrain for beginner to intermediate skiers
Manageable size (no mega-resort fatigue)
Easy half-day commitment
End the night with a Canadian delicacy with Fireside Moments S’mores. Yum.
🎿 Day 2 Morning — Adventure & Relaxation
After enjoying a delicious breakfast in the Black Diamond Club lounge or one of the on-site restaurants, get the blood flowing with one of the many activities nearby, such as:
Snowshoeing
Cross-country Skiing
Medicine Walk with Mahikan Trails
Second ski day at Nakiska Ski Resort
Adventure is a great way to start the day, but don’t overdo it.
Because the afternoon is where things get good.
♨️ Day 2 Afternoon — Nordic Spa Circuit
Back at the lodge, trade ski boots for robes.
The Kananaskis Nordic Spa here is built for contrast therapy — hot pools, cold plunges, saunas, steam rooms, and forest relaxation spaces.
The formula:
Hot → cold → rest → repeat.
Snow on your shoulders. Steam in the air. Silence except for water and wind.
If you’ve never paired skiing with hydrotherapy in the same day, you’re about to ruin regular mountain escapes forever. It truly is a magical experience.
And as a bonus, you can enjoy lunch without leaving the spa at Two Trees Bistro.
🍷 Day 2 Evening — Tasty Delights
Post-spa dinner & drinks hit differently.
After a truly refreshing Nordic circuit, hit up the Cedar Room for a special Cocktail Class where you can learn how to make your own fancy drinks.
Then follow it up with a delicious dinner at either Blacktail Bar or Forte.
Return to the Black Diamond Club lounge for evening canapés and/or go for a relaxing walk around the property before settling into your luxurious room for the night.
This is the kind of night where:
Phones should stay face down
Conversations can slow down
Connection should be easy
🥾 Day 3 — Last but not Least
No alarms. No rush. We recommend sleeping in.
Then, enjoy breakfast in the lounge (another Black Diamond perk). Coffee in hand.
Then go for a morning skate on the outdoor rink.
Nothing screams Canada in the winter more than a gentle outdoor skate while surrounded by towering mountain peaks. What a way to end a winter escape. Skates can be rented on-site, or you can bring your own.
Kananaskis Country spans over 4,000 square kilometres — but you don’t need epic mileage to feel like you’ve escaped.
Sometimes the win is just being here.
🚗 Know Before You Go
Kananaskis Country requires a Kananaskis Conservation Pass for parking and access. It supports trail maintenance and conservation across the region — and it’s easy to purchase online before your trip.
You can buy daily or annual passes online from the Government of Alberta before you go.

International Departures
Do it again, but in Zermatt, Switzerland
If Kananaskis is your Alberta alpine escape, Zermatt is the European cousin.
Car-free streets. Wooden chalets. The Matterhorn stands dramatically overhead. It’s the kind of place where winter isn’t endured — it’s celebrated.
Days here are built around skiing, snowshoeing, and mountain trains that climb into postcard-level scenery. Even beginners can access high-alpine views without committing to extreme terrain.
But like Kananaskis, the magic isn’t just the mountains — it’s the rhythm.
Ski in the morning.
Sauna in the afternoon.
Long dinner in the evening.
Swiss wellness culture leans heavily into hydrotherapy, heated outdoor pools, and spa circuits overlooking snowy peaks. Steam and snow coexist beautifully.
If your Kananaskis weekend leaves you craving more alpine air, Zermatt is what that looks like on an international scale.
Different continent. Same mountain energy.

Watch
If you happen to visit Kananaskis in the warmer months, don’t miss some of the epic hiking opportunities. One of those is Sarrail Ridge with sweeping views of Kananaskis Lakes.
