Things to Do in Canada 281
Father's Day. Drive a Race Car. Catch a Dinosaur. Pan for Gold.
Did you know? Father's Day was first celebrated in 1910 after a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd wanted to honour her father, a Civil War veteran who raised six children on his own.
More than a century later, one thing hasn't changed: The best Father's Day gifts are often time spent together.
As a fairly new dad myself, I can definitely say that spending time with my “babies” is the #1 thing for me on Father’s Day.
So, if you’re looking for some ideas on what to do, whether it’s this coming Father’s Day or next year, we’ve got some cool ideas for you in the 281st edition of the Weekly Goose!
Enjoy!

Let's be honest.
Most dads don't actually need another gift.
What they really want is a story.
The giant fish that almost got away. The racecar they finally got to drive. The helicopter flight they'll be talking about for years.
So whether you're shopping for Father's Day or simply looking for inspiration for your next adventure, here are eight unforgettable Canadian experiences that Dad will never forget.
1. Catch a Giant Sturgeon in British Columbia
White sturgeon have been swimming through BC rivers since before the dinosaurs disappeared.
Some grow over 10 feet long and can weigh hundreds of pounds.
Hooking one isn't just fishing. It's a battle against a living dinosaur.
Whether you're an experienced angler or trying it for the first time, it's one of the most unique outdoor experiences in Canada.

Can you find us in the back? This is Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours in Niagara Falls.
2. Race Through Rapids on a Jet Boat
Part sightseeing tour. Part adrenaline rush.
Jet boats can blast through shallow rivers, tight turns, and powerful rapids while showcasing some of Canada's most spectacular scenery.
From the Niagara Gorge to remote wilderness rivers in Northern BC, it's a roller coaster that happens to float.
👉 Some great options include:
Northern BC Jet Boat Tours: I literally did one of these trips up the Skeena River this past May. It’s scenic, it’s historic, and it’s all surrounded by jaw-dropping scenery.
Revy Jets: Also in BC, this company runs jet boats on the Columbia River amongst the mountainous scenery of Revelstoke.
Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours: I also did this last fall. These famous jet boats blast through Class 5 rapids in the Niagara Gorge. You can choose wet or dry rides. We recommend the wet one.
3. See Canada's Wilderness From the Air
Canada is impressive from the ground. It's unforgettable from the sky.
Whether it's a floatplane flight over the BC coast, a helicopter tour above the Rockies, or a flightseeing adventure over remote wilderness, this is one of those bucket-list experiences that immediately becomes a core memory.
The nice thing about something like this is that there are options from coast to coast to coast.
We’ve taken a variety of incredible flightseeing tours, such as a helicopter over the Canadian Rockies, a helicopter over Niagara Falls, a floatplane over Vancouver, and so much more.

It was an amazing experience, but we definitely need more practice before we win a race.
4. Drive a Real Race Car
Ever wondered what it feels like to hit a race track at full speed?
Turns out, you don't need to become a professional driver to find out.
Across Canada, race tracks offer experiences where everyday drivers can get behind the wheel of high-performance race cars and experience the thrill of controlled speed in a safe environment.
It's probably the closest most of us will ever get to becoming a Formula One driver.
👉 Some options include the Edmonton International Raceway and Pro Circuit Racing in Alberta, Toronto Motorsports Park and Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Ontario, Speed-Fanatics Motorsport Circuit in BC, Wyant Group Raceway in Saskatchewan, ICAR Experience in Quebec, and Atlantic Motorsport Park in Nova Scotia.
5. Go Shark Fishing in Nova Scotia
Most Canadians have no idea this exists.
Every summer, blue sharks migrate through Atlantic Canadian waters, creating one of the country's most surprising fishing adventures.
It's catch-and-release, highly regulated, and a completely different experience than your typical day on the water.

Aspen Crossing, Alberta.
6. Ride a Heritage Train Through Canada's Countryside
There’s something timeless about train travel.
But train travel in Canada doesn’t have to be about multi-day train trips or expensive excursions through the Rockies.
From Alberta's themed dinner trains to steam-powered excursions through BC vineyards and Ontario countryside, heritage railways offer one of Canada's most underrated adventures, and at a much lower cost.
Some popular options include:
Aspen Crossing Railway: This train experience just south of Calgary offers a variety of themed experiences, such as wine & Cheese trains, Ales on Rails, Dinner trains, Murder mystery experiences, and so much more. Plus, you can go camping there and even stay in a caboose!
Kettle Valley Steam Railway: A steam train running through vineyards, orchards, and over the famous Trout Creek Trestle in the Okanagan. It's one of the most scenic short rail experiences in Canada.
Prairie Dog Central Railway: A vintage steam train through prairie landscapes with themed excursions and dinner experiences.
South Simcoe Railway: One of Canada's oldest operating steam railways offering heritage excursions through rural Ontario.
7. Pan for Gold in the Yukon
More than a century after the Klondike Gold Rush transformed the Yukon, visitors can still try their luck searching for gold.
It's part history lesson, part treasure hunt, and one of the most uniquely Canadian experiences you'll find anywhere in the country.
It’s not an easy place to get to, but just being in a place like Dawson is a bucket-list experience in and of itself.
And yes, if you find gold, you get to keep it.

Follow Scotland's Whisky Trail

Some countries have wineries.
Scotland has entire regions built around whisky.
In Speyside alone, more than 50 distilleries are located along the River Spey, making it one of the world's most famous whisky destinations. Visitors can tour legendary distilleries such as Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, Macallan, and Balvenie while learning how Scotland's national drink is crafted.
For an even more memorable experience, whisky lovers can combine train travel with distillery visits. Scotland offers everything from heritage railways through whisky country to luxury whisky-focused rail journeys that stop at iconic distilleries along the way.
It's part road trip, part history lesson, and part tasting tour.
In other words, exactly the sort of adventure many dads would choose for themselves.

When planning an adventure for dad, know that it doesn’t have to be a busy A-list destination. A few years back, I took my dad to a small town in Alberta called Lac La Biche. We enjoyed some epic fishing and did a few unexpected things as well, such as learning how to make stained glass.
