Things to Do in Canada 282

The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth

Did you know? Over 200,000 free pancakes are served at community breakfasts across Calgary during Stampede. This tradition started in 1923 when a guy named Wildhorse Jack pulled up his chuckwagon downtown and started flipping hotcakes for strangers. Over a century later, the pancakes are still free, and the party has grown considerably.

And that big party, known as the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, is starting next week!

Whether you live in Calgary or plan to visit during this crazy time, we thought we’d give you a head start with this guide to the Calgary Stampede, including things to do, how to save money, and more!

Enjoy!

The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth Is Only One Week Away

If you've never been to the Calgary Stampede, this is your sign. And if you have been β€” you already know what we're about to say. Every July, Calgary transforms into something that has to be experienced to be understood. Cowboys, concerts, chuckwagons, midway food that defies all logic, and an energy that takes over the entire city for 10 straight days. This year, the Stampede runs July 3–12, 2026, and the lineup is genuinely one of the best in years. Here's everything you need to know before you go.

🎟️ How to Get In for Free (Or Almost Free)

This is the section to screenshot. The Stampede has more ways to save than most people realize.

Free admission days:

  • July 3 (Opening Day) β€” Head straight from the parade to the grounds and get in free from 11 am to 1:30 pm

  • July 5 (Family Day) β€” Free admission until 11 am, free pancake breakfast 8–10 am, free variety show in GMC Stadium

  • July 7 (TC Energy Community Day) β€” Free for everyone, 10 am–1 pm, free all day for seniors 65+ and military veterans

  • July 8 (BMO Kids Day) β€” Free for everyone until 11 am, free all day for kids 12 and under

Deals worth knowing:

  • 7-Eleven Coke deal β€” Buy two Coca-Cola products and get two admissions for $32 β€” over 40% off regular price

  • Real Canadian Superstore / Your Independent Grocer β€” Spend $5 on Coca-Cola products and save $10 on admission

  • Costco Stampede Bucks β€” $39.99 for a $50 gift card redeemable on food, rides, rodeo tickets, and more

  • SuperPass β€” $50+tax for unlimited entry all 10 days. Buy before July 2.

  • Stampede Lotteries β€” Buy a Stampede lottery ticket and get 50% off rodeo and evening show tickets

Pro tip: If you’re buying a Rodeo or Evening Show ticket, your admission to the park is included.

🀠 What to Actually Do There

Most first-timers structure their day around two anchors β€” the afternoon rodeo and the evening show β€” and fill everything else in around them. Here's what not to miss:

The Rodeo
Daily at 1:30 pm, the world's largest outdoor rodeo runs all 10 days through to Championship Sunday. Buy tickets in advance and choose covered seats if you want insurance against the heat or an afternoon shower. Your rodeo ticket includes park admission.

The Evening Show
Nightly at 7:15 pm β€” the Rangeland Derby Chuckwagon Races, the ENMAX Relay Races, and the Grandstand Show featuring Alberta's own High Valley and the Young Canadians. It's loud, it's dramatic, and the fireworks that close it out every night are worth staying for. Your ticket includes park admission.

The Stampede Powwow
July 6 - 7 at the Saddledome β€” world-class Indigenous dancers and drummers from across the country, free with park admission. One of the most genuinely moving parts of the whole event is criminally underrated.

The Midway
Rides, games, and food that will make you question every decision you've ever made β€” in the best way. Over 2 million mini donuts are consumed here every year. You will have at least one bag. Plan accordingly.

Stampede Stand-Up Comedy
July 10 & 11 at the Stage of Wonders β€” Just For Laughs comedians, free with park admission, 18+. A genuinely fun late-night option if you need a break from the boots and belt buckles.

The Fireworks
Every night after the Evening Show. Best free viewing spots outside the grounds: Scotsman's Hill for a postcard view of the skyline, Tom Campbell's Hill for fewer crowds, or RiverWalk near Fort Calgary for a relaxed riverfront experience.

This is just a taste of some of the key attractions, but there’s so much more. Learn more here.

🎡 The Music

This year's lineup is stacked β€” both on and off the grounds. In fact, the Calgary Stampede has become one of the best music festivals in the country. More than 10 days of non-stop entertainment from all genres. It’s now the #1 thing we love about the Stampede.

Free concerts with park admission:

Coca-Cola Stage
The Coca-Cola Stage's 2026 lineup includes Alessia Cara, All Time Low, Ashe, Ayra Starr, Chingy, deadmau5, Fridayy, Jonah Kagen, Mother Mother, Our Lady Peace, and The Beaches β€” all performances free with admission to Stampede Park. The festival kicks off July 2 with rising artists Ashe and The Takes, builds through the first weekend with Scott Helman and Alessia Cara on Friday, All Time Low on Saturday, and Our Lady Peace on Sunday, then shifts midweek with Jonah Kagen, deadmau5, Chingy, and Mother Mother before closing out the second weekend with Fridayy, Ayra Starr, and The Beaches. Genre-wise, it's all over the map β€” pop, rock, EDM, hip hop β€” which is exactly the point.

Nashville North
Billed as the original Stampede party tent, Nashville North is returning "bigger and better" for 2026 with a bigger tent and bigger artists. The schedule kicks off July 2 with Josh Ross headlining, followed by Ashley McBryde on July 3, Redferrin on July 4, and Russell Dickerson closing out the first weekend on July 5. Later in the week, expect Ashley McBryde, Russell Dickerson, Ernest, Bailey Zimmerman, Chris Young, Chris Janson, and Parmalee, alongside house bands performing throughout the festival. If country music and a packed dance floor are your idea of a good night, this is it

The Big Four Roadhouse
The Big Four Roadhouse's 2026 lineup features Colin James, Everlast, Glass Tiger, Johnny Reid, Tanya Tucker, Terri Clark, The Marshall Tucker Band, and William Prince, joined by Logan Ryan Band, Mariya Stokes, Sons of Legion, and Quinton Blair, among others. It's a come-as-you-are honkytonk with a buzzing bar, a mechanical bull, and live music every night β€” the kind of venue built for eating, drinking, and dancing in equal measure. While general admission is free, there are options for a more β€œVIP” experience with the Roadhouse Rush Pass starting at $40 and reserved tables for four or six running $240 and $360.

Stampede Concert Series (ticketed, at the Saddledome):

  • A$AP Rocky β€” July 4

  • Alanis Morissette β€” July 11

Off the grounds Music Festivals

Wildhorse Saloon & National Saloon

Two other fantastic music venues are Wildhorse Saloon and National Saloon, both of which are bringing serious lineups, too. At Wildhorse Saloon, expect Down With Webster (July 2), Elliot Brood (July 3), Modest Mouse (July 5), Matthew Good & His Band (July 6), Evan Honer (July 7), Hank Azaria & The EZ Street Band (July 8), The Dead South (July 9), Matt Mays (July 10), and The Rural Alberta Advantage (July 11). Over at National Saloon, the lineup includes Waylon Wyatt (July 2), Cole Bradley (July 3), LØLØ (July 4), Disco Ranch (July 4), Big Wreck (July 5), Yung Gravy (July 6), Chad Brownlee (July 7), Steven Page (July 9), and Grandson (July 10). Two more reasons Stampede nights are just as good as the days.

Badlands Music Festival

If you're looking for big-name artists, massive production, and late-night energy, Badlands Music Festival has become one of Calgary's premier Stampede parties. Located just steps from Stampede Park, this 10-day outdoor festival transforms the city into a concert destination, featuring major country, hip-hop, EDM, and pop acts from around the world. Whether you're there for the headliners or simply looking to keep the party going after the rodeo ends, Badlands delivers one of the biggest nightlife experiences of Stampede week.

Roundup & Oxford Stomp

For a more traditional Stampede party atmosphere, Roundup and Oxford Stomp have been Calgary staples for decades. Expect live country music, western-themed entertainment, dancing, cold drinks, and thousands of cowboy hats. These iconic venues capture the spirit of Stampede culture and remain some of the best places to experience Calgary's western hospitality, whether you're a lifelong local or visiting for your very first Stampede. This year’s lineup includes Billy Idol, Foster the People, Arkells, and more.

Cowboys Music Festival

Few events are as synonymous with Stampede as the Cowboys Music Festival. What started as a local tent party has grown into one of Canada's largest music festivals, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors over 10 days each July. Located just outside Stampede Park, Cowboys features a packed lineup of country stars, chart-topping artists, DJs, and unforgettable nightlife experiences. Whether you're looking to sing along with your favourite country artist or dance late into the night, Cowboys has become one of the must-visit destinations during Stampede week. Some of the acts this year include Macklemore, the Chainsmokers, Flo Rida, Steve Aoki, John Summit, and more.

πŸ“ Insider Tips Before You Go

  • Don't drive. Traffic near the grounds is brutal, and parking is expensive. Take the CTrain to Victoria Park/Stampede Station β€” it drops you right at the entrance.

  • Go on a weekday. Weekday mornings have the shortest lines. A rainy day means almost no lines at all.

  • Share the midway food. Portions are huge, and everything is expensive. Buy a few things and share β€” you'll try more and spend less.

  • Book your hotel in advance. Calgary hotels sell out fast during Stampede week, and rates climb sharply as July approaches. Downtown is most convenient, but at this time of year, you take what you get.

  • You don't need 10 days. One or two days on the grounds is plenty for most visitors. Use the rest of the time to explore Calgary, Banff, or Canmore.

  • Free pancake breakfasts are everywhere. Click here to find one near you β€” businesses and community groups serve them all over the city all 10 days.

International Departures

Cowboys Exist Everywhere β€” Argentina's Are Just More Dramatic

Think "cowboy" and you think Alberta. Fair enough. But while Canada was busy building its rodeo culture, Argentina was doing something similar β€” just with more Malbec and a landscape that stretches to the horizon in every direction.

The gaucho is more than just a symbol of Argentina β€” he represents the heart and soul of Argentine culture, embodying independence, bravery, and a deep connection to the land. For centuries, gauchos worked the vast pampas grasslands of Argentina on horseback, herding cattle across one of the most dramatic plains on earth. They're Argentina's answer to the cowboy β€” and in many ways, the original version.

The best way to experience gaucho culture today is through an estancia day trip from Buenos Aires. A typical day takes you out to a traditional ranch in San Antonio de Areco β€” the heart of gaucho country β€” where you saddle up for a horseback ride across the pampas, tuck into a legendary asado barbecue of Argentine steak, empanadas, and unlimited Malbec, and watch a folklore show featuring live music, folk dancing, and a dramatic horsemanship display.

It's the kind of day that makes you understand why Argentines are so proud of where they come from. Sound familiar?

πŸ“ San Antonio de Areco is about 90 minutes from Buenos Aires by road and is the unofficial capital of gaucho culture in Argentina. Most estancia tours include hotel pickup and drop-off from BA.

Beaver Bites
  • Meet the Stampede's Wildest New Food: The Cheesy Saddle Slice
This year's Stampede Midway is introducing over 65 new food items, but the one everyone's talking about is the Cheesy Saddle Slice β€” a Pizza 73 cheese pizza slice dipped in corn dog batter, dusted with Cheetos seasoning, deep-fried to golden perfection, and topped with creamy garlic and your choice of pickles or pepperoni. The name was chosen from over 1,900 submissions. I don’t know if this is yum or yuck, but it’s definitely not something you want to eat every day.

  • The Stampede Bowl Is Back β€” With a Country Music Headliner
On July 2 β€” the night before Stampede officially opens β€” the Calgary Stampeders host the Toronto Argonauts in the Stampede Bowl, with country music superstar Dasha performing at halftime. Her 2024 single "Austin (Boots Stop Workin')" went 49-times platinum. A great way to kick off the week before the rodeo even starts.

  • Calgary Just Landed on the World's Best Restaurants List
The World's 50 Best Restaurants released its list of North America's 50 Best for 2026, and Calgary's Eight β€” helmed by chef Darren MacLean β€” took second place on the continent, also earning the title of Best Restaurant in Western Canada and Highest New Entry Award. If you're coming to Calgary for Stampede, now you have dinner plans too.

  • A 1,000-Pound Butter Cowboy Is On Display in Calgary Right Now
At Contemporary Calgary through November 8, artist Ghazaleh Avarzamani has installed a massive 1,000-pound butter sculpture depicting a cowboy on horseback β€” part of a Monopoly-inspired exhibition exploring volatile economic markets and the labour of butter churning. Only in Calgary during Stampede season.

  • Calgary Is Getting a W Hotel β€” And It's Going to Be Wild
Marriott has announced plans for a 69-storey W Calgary tower featuring 157 guest rooms, 27 suites, a rooftop bar, and a 7,500 sq ft spa β€” part of a $1.47 billion hotel development that also includes a JW Marriott and Autograph Collection property. Calgary's hotel scene is having a serious glow-up. Worth knowing if Stampede has you thinking about a future trip.
