Weekly Goose 134

Good morning!

Did you know? While John Cabot’s landing in St. John’s back in 1497 is generally thought to be the first European encounter with the North American continent, it was actually Leif Eriksson and the Vikings who reached this area long before him. L’Anse aux Meadows, located at the northern tip of the island, was the location of a Viking colony that is believed to be around 1,000 years old. This spot is so important that it was named a Canadian UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978.

Speaking of L’Anse aux Meadows, we visited the site in 2019 as we travelled the Viking Trail, one of the best road trips in Newfoundland. Although we’ve been to “The Rock” many times, it was our first time that far north, and as always the case with Newfoundland, it was an amazing time.

So, without further ado, enjoy the 134th edition of the Weekly Goose, featuring travel guides and videos about Newfoundland!

Happy travels!

  • It looks like the father and son who took a road trip from the USA to Canada to buy ketchup chips have gotten more than they bargained for. After learning about the story, chip manufacturers and other companies have been sending them boxes of chips and other products, which has proved far too many for them to eat. So, they’re donating them instead.

  • Fans of Bob Dylan can rejoice now that he has announced a few shows in Canada to take place in October. The 82-year-old legendary singer-songwriter will play in Toronto and in Montreal.
